Mistral released Mistral Large 4 on October 6, 2026, saying it is the company's most powerful open model to date. It is the company's first major update since the release of Mistral Large 3.
Mistral reported a score of 38 in the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, measured on ten benchmarks across different domains. That compares with a score of 9 for its predecessor, Mistral Large 3.
Mistral Large 4 is built on a one-trillion-parameter model with 49 billion active parameters and targets IT security tasks. Availability begins now through Mistral Studio, initially for security firms, vetted partners, and government agencies.
"On X, the company says ML4 is the best open-weight model from the US or Europe across aggregated benchmarks," said Mistral. The model claims state-of-the-art performance in cyber defense, manufacturing, and finance.
The announcement follows Mistral's focus shift from consumers toward enterprise customers. Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch warned a French parliamentary commission that Europe risks becoming dependent on US models for cybersecurity.
Mistral did not say how the model reliably tells legitimate vulnerability research apart from attack prep, and the open question remains about its ability to distinguish between the two. The company expects significant improvements over the coming weeks.
