Mozilla released Firefox Smart Window (beta) on September 16, 2026, saying it offers AI-powered browsing that prioritizes privacy. It is the company's first major AI update since its previous browser enhancements in 2024.
Mozilla reported no data storage on its servers by default, measured through its privacy commitments with Mistral. That compares with previous practices where user data was stored in some cases.
Smart Window is built on Mistral's models and targets complex searches, content recall, and tab-based information summarization. Availability begins in France and North America, initially for users in those regions.
"Conversations aren't stored on Mozilla's servers by default," said Maximilian Schreiner, according to the source. "Mistral commits to storing no data, ensuring user privacy."
The announcement follows Mistral's expansion into consumer markets. The companies say the browser should stay a place where different AI providers can compete and where open source has a firm spot.
Mozilla did not say how the AI will scale across more regions, and the open question remains about long-term privacy guarantees. The source says the UK and Germany will follow later this year.
