Scaleout Systems, a NATO-backed startup, released its AI-driven drone technology for autonomous reconnaissance and attack missions. It is the company's first major update since pivoting toward defense applications in 2022.

The company reported its AI models can perform computer vision tasks on edge hardware, including drones and field command posts. That compares with its earlier focus on commercial vehicles, where it trained machine learning models.

The AI technology is built on leaner models designed for edge computing and targets battlefield environments where drones collect sensor data for target identification. Availability begins with NATO allies and military units, initially for surveillance and reconnaissance operations.

"They need to fit on forward-deployed hardware and edge hardware, which can vary quite a bit from small embedded devices to quite powerful edge workstations," said Andreas Hellander, cofounder and CEO of Scaleout Systems. The AI models help operators identify targets while intermittently sharing updates with local computing nodes.

The announcement follows Scaleout's participation in NATO’s DIANA Challenge Program in 2025. The company is working on adapting machine learning models for edge computing hardware found in drones, drone pilot tablets, and field command posts.

Scaleout did not say when the AI models will be fully operational in combat scenarios, and it raised the open question of how well models trained in one environment will perform in another. The company plans to test the technology in live exercises and public demonstrations.
