Nvidia and Amazon are expanding their investments in power infrastructure to meet the growing energy demands of AI systems. The companies are building massive power facilities to support their data centers, which are essential for training and running large-scale AI models. These investments reflect the rising energy costs associated with AI operations and the need for reliable power sources.
Nvidia has announced a potential $2 billion investment in Lancium, a company that develops power infrastructure for major tech firms like OpenAI and Oracle. This investment would grant Nvidia approximately 20 percent ownership in Lancium, which is valued at around $10 billion. Lancium already has four gigawatts of power under contract in Texas and is developing sites for up to 15 more gigawatts. Amazon, on the other hand, is backing a large gas-fired power plant in Pecos County, Texas, which could emit up to 33 million tons of CO₂ annually, making it the dirtiest power plant in the country.
Environmental groups are raising concerns about the health and pollution risks associated with these large-scale power projects. Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather estimates that a heavy user of agentic AI consumes about as much energy per year as a clothes dryer, and this energy usage is increasing.
