Nvidia has announced a significant investment in Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the AI lab led by Ilya Sutskever, former chief scientist of OpenAI. The deal, part of a long-term partnership, grants SSI access to Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin GPU platform, which the companies claim will increase its compute capacity tenfold. The investment aims to reduce SSI's dependence on Google's TPU chips, which it had previously relied on, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The partnership is seen as a strategic move for Nvidia to strengthen its position in the AI chip market amid the current boom. Sutskever emphasized that the research focuses on 'overlooked aspects of how the human brain functions.' SSI was established in 2024 with the goal of achieving a 'straight-shot' toward safe superintelligence. The lab has raised approximately $2 billion from major investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, DST Global, and Greenoaks, and was recently valued at around $30 billion.
