OpenAI and Synopsys have signed a multi-year strategic partnership to build a specialized AI model for chip design called GPT-Synopsys. The collaboration combines OpenAI's AI technology with Synopsys' electronic design automation (EDA) tools, aiming to create a model that can 'reason about chip design and verification, and to directly operate Synopsys' tools.'
The model will be trained using Synopsys' EDA tools, which are licensed by OpenAI for the project. Customer data will not be used for training and will be stored encrypted, according to both companies. Early tests with semiconductor customers are already underway, and the product will be marketed jointly by both companies, with shared revenue.
"AI could significantly speed up the design process," said Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi. The partnership is expected to enhance the efficiency of chip design, potentially leading to faster development cycles and improved chip performance.
The announcement follows OpenAI's collaboration with Broadcom on chips built specifically for running AI models, including the recently unveiled Jalapeno chip, which is very competitive against similar specialized chips.
OpenAI did not specify the exact timeline for full product release, and the model's ability to handle complex design challenges remains under evaluation. Both companies plan to continue refining the technology and expanding its applications in the semiconductor industry.
