OpenAI developer Thibault Sottiaux said Astra increased productivity so much it pushed some plans forward by six months. The internal use of Astra, according to Sottiaux, has led to a significant jump in productivity, causing several projects to be accelerated.

Sottiaux, who previously called Astra OpenAI's 'biggest competitive advantage' before its public release, noted that the tool's impact on efficiency is measurable. A recent study by IAPS fellow Severin Field supports this, with 20 out of 25 researchers surveyed at OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Meta ranking AI research automation as a major risk.

The automation of AI research has already led to several milestones being reached, with half the respondents expecting the most powerful models to remain internal. Anthropic similarly claims that Claude now writes over 80 percent of its own production code, highlighting the trend toward self-improving AI models.

"Since the team started using it internally, productivity jumped so much that some plans got moved up by six months," said Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI developer. The internal use of Astra has led to a significant acceleration in project timelines, according to Sottiaux.

The announcement follows a recent study by IAPS fellow Severin Field, which underscores the growing concern around AI research automation. The study highlights how the automation of AI research is becoming a critical issue, with researchers flagging several milestones already achieved.

OpenAI did not say how Astra will be integrated into its broader product strategy, and the open question remains about the extent of its impact on future AI development. The company has not provided further details on how Astra will shape upcoming projects.
