OpenAI announced the expansion of its Academy training program, aiming to bring AI education to more communities. The initiative, launched in September 2024, has engaged over 4 million people through more than 250 events, providing practical skills for tasks ranging from teaching to software development.
The Academy has grown to include self-paced courses, practical guides, in-person workshops, and large multi-site events known as AI Skills Jams. This month, new learning paths were introduced for knowledge workers, developers, leaders, educators, and college students, allowing learners to earn course badges by passing assessments.
"The most valuable part of our training is giving people dedicated time and space to try AI tools on work that matters to them, learn from their peers, and get coaching and support from OpenAI mentors," said OpenAI. This approach has been refined through partnerships and will now be expanded to more communities around the country.
The expansion includes a new Community Trainer Program, which will help partner organizations build their capacity to teach AI skills. Participating organizations will nominate staff to learn the Academy curriculum and guide practical workshops, with training and a facilitation assessment required before leading sessions.
OpenAI did not specify the exact timeline for the full rollout of the Community Trainer Program, and the company emphasized the need for ongoing support as tools and community needs evolve. The next phase of the Academy will continue developing online courses, workshops, and Jams, informed by participant and partner feedback.
