OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol and Luna on September 22, 2026, saying it reduced token prices by 50% compared to its predecessors. It is the company's first major update to its GPT series since the launch of GPT-5.6 in 2025.
OpenAI reported a 50% reduction in token costs, measured on per-million input and output token pricing. That compares with $4 and $20 per million input and output tokens for GPT-5.6 Sol, and $0.20 and $1.20 for GPT-5.6 Luna.
GPT-6 Sol and Luna are built on OpenAI's improved caching and inference systems and target specific use cases. Availability begins with a phased rollout, initially for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users. Free and Go users get access to Luna through the desktop app.
"The biggest change is a 50 percent price cut compared with GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna," said OpenAI. The company is passing those savings directly to users by improving caching and inference.
The announcement follows OpenAI's previous model updates, which focused on enhancing performance and reducing costs. OpenAI framed the release as a strategic move to compete with Anthropic's models in the price-to-performance category.
OpenAI did not say how the models will perform on all benchmarks, and raised questions about the models' ability to meet real-world demands. The company said the models need to prove themselves in day-to-day work, since benchmarks only tell part of the story.
