OpenAI released Dots, always-on AI agents, on September 29, 2026, saying they can handle tasks like research and coding independently. It is the company's first major update to its AI agent platform since the launch of Meta's Muse agent three weeks earlier.
OpenAI reported Dots are built on GPT-6 Astra and target work tasks such as bug fixing and invoice management. Availability begins with a restricted launch, initially for Pro users outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK.
"Dots are always-on agents that take over ongoing tasks, keep an eye on projects, and reach out when something needs the user's attention," said Maximilian Schreiner, OpenAI's spokesperson. Each Dot has its own cloud computer with a browser, so it can work around the clock.
The announcement follows Meta's launch of Muse, which runs on its own secured computer with a browser. OpenAI says the Dots are similar to Muse but focus on work tasks like fixing bugs reported in Slack or sending out forgotten invoices.
OpenAI did not say how Dots will handle sensitive data, and users must approve any action that affects accounts or shares information. The company also noted Dots can make mistakes and recommends double-checking results that carry real consequences.
