OpenAI released Astra for Law on September 17, 2026, saying it combines GPT-6 Astra with legal tools for enhanced legal research. It is the company's first major legal AI update since the launch of GPT-6 Astra.
OpenAI reported Astra for Law passed the overall correctness check on 54.0% of legal research questions, measured on the Vals AI Legal Research Bench. That compares with 38.7% for GPT-6 Astra using web search alone.
Astra for Law is built on GPT-6 Astra and targets legal research, analysis, and writing. Availability begins with a Trusted Access Program, initially for selected law firms.
"We were grateful to preview early versions of Astra for Law, which were built with legal use-cases in mind," said John Savva, Partner, Sullivan & Cromwell. "Across both litigation and transactional matters, the models demonstrated impressive research depth and sensitivity to authority."
The announcement follows OpenAI's expansion of work on privacy and governance for legal use. OpenAI said the release reflects its commitment to providing legal tools with strong controls and reliability.
OpenAI did not say when the product will be available to the broader market, and noted that further testing and refinement are needed. The company said it will bring legal capabilities to its latest models as frontier models advance.
