OpenAI released the Data agent in ChatGPT Work on September 10, 2026, saying it allows users to generate insights and dashboards from company data through natural language queries. It is the company's first software update since the launch of ChatGPT Work in 2025.

The Data agent connects to approved data sources including Amazon Redshift, Datadog, Google BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, MongoDB, Snowflake, and more. It can also bring files and documents from Google Drive and SharePoint into the analysis.

"With the Data agent in ChatGPT Work, users can connect directly to Amazon Redshift, making it as easy as asking a question to explore data, surface insights, and make faster decisions across their organization," said Naresh Chainani, Director of Engineering, AWS. The tool enables users to ask follow-up questions to investigate results and review evidence behind each finding.

The announcement follows the launch of ChatGPT Work in 2025, which aimed to streamline business workflows using AI. OpenAI said the Data agent enhances the platform by allowing users to turn questions into analysis and action without needing to write queries or learn a new analytics tool.

OpenAI did not say how the Data agent will perform in real-world scenarios, and it raised the question of how well it will handle complex data relationships. The company said it will continue to refine the tool based on user feedback and internal testing.
