OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol on September 22, 2026, saying it nearly matches GPT-6 Astra’s intelligence on coding, computer use, and professional work. It is the company's first major update to the Sol series since the launch of GPT-6 Sol.
OpenAI reported GPT-6.1 Sol scores higher than Opus 5.5 with fallbacks at less than half the cost per task on GDP.pdf, a benchmark measuring professional question-answering using complex PDFs. That compares with GPT-6 Sol’s performance on the same benchmark.
GPT-6.1 Sol is built on OpenAI’s infrastructure and targets developers and businesses needing cost-effective tools for coding, document analysis, and workflow automation. Availability begins today, initially for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex.
"Cached input costs just $0.10 per million tokens—95% less than standard input pricing," said OpenAI. The model offers significant improvements over its predecessor in complex professional tasks.
The announcement follows the release of GPT-6 Astra, a model noted for its advanced capabilities in scientific research and professional work. OpenAI framed the release as part of its ongoing effort to improve accessibility and efficiency in AI tools.
OpenAI did not say how GPT-6.1 Sol will perform on tasks requiring real-time data access, and it raised questions about its effectiveness in dynamic environments. The company said it will also offer GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast in the coming days.
