OpenAI has announced it is removing limits on text-based chats for all users on ChatGPT, including free users. The company said the change will be powered by the new GPT-5.6 Luna model, which will replace GPT-5.5 as the default for Free and Go users. The update also introduces a new 'Think' button that lets users select higher reasoning power for complex questions. OpenAI noted that separate limits will still apply for files, images, voice, and image generation. The changes are part of an ongoing effort to improve the user experience and address specific user needs.
Plus and Pro users will gain access to an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model, which is better suited for quick tasks such as answering questions, conducting web research, offering advice, planning, writing, and making decisions. The company said the new model provides more compact and robust answers. Notably, this version of GPT-5.6 Sol is separate from the one used for Codex and Work, which remains unchanged. Plus and Pro users will also get a thinking slider to adjust how much thought the model puts into an answer, based on the complexity and steps involved in solving a query.
OpenAI shared that internal evaluations found factual errors were 62% less common for GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% less common for GPT-5.6 Sol compared to GPT-5.5-Instant. The updated version of GPT-5.6 Sol is now available to Plus and Pro users, while changes for Free and Go users are arriving this week. Next week, users will gain access to unlimited text chats and the new Think button for harder questions.
