This pattern suggests that AI is enabling a more fluid division of labor, where tasks once requiring handoffs can now be handled by the person who first encounters the need. The findings provide an early glimpse into how AI may be reshaping job content before changes are reflected in official job descriptions or titles.
The study also notes that the size and structure of a business influence how AI changes work. In smaller organizations, workers are more likely to take on tasks that would otherwise require delegation, while larger companies may rely on specialized teams. Among average users, the share of outside-occupation tasks decreases as workspace size increases, but heavy users show less variation. This suggests that AI usage patterns may reflect the availability of specialist resources, with AI serving as a generalist tool in environments where such resources are scarce. The report emphasizes that AI usage data offers an early signal of occupational change, which conventional labor-market statistics may only capture later.
