OpenAI released new features at its Dev Day event on Tuesday, turning ChatGPT into an app discovery platform. It is the company's first major update to its chatbot interface since the launch of its agentic assistants known as Dots.
OpenAI reported that ChatGPT now has 1.2 billion weekly users, measured on its global reach. That compares with its prior user count of 1 billion, reported in previous quarters.
The new features are built on ChatGPT’s plugin architecture and target app discovery and integration. Availability begins with the current release, initially for all users.
"Sign in with ChatGPT will let them bring their AI allowance with them," said OpenAI. Developers can build AI-native versions of their apps through Chat, the same way they would through the open web or a mobile app store.
The announcement follows OpenAI’s Dev Day event, where the company showcased how its own new meeting app could work inside ChatGPT. The source itself frames the significance as a shift in how apps are discovered and used.
OpenAI did not say these features would eliminate the need for separate third-party subscriptions, and it raised the open question of how app makers will monetize their services outside traditional app stores. The source says the company is focusing on building the discovery, distribution, and interface pieces to counter the app store model.
