OpenAI released Dots, its new AI agent, at DevDay, saying it can proactively complete tasks and make autonomous decisions. The tool is the company's first major agent update since launching Muse.
OpenAI reported Dots, powered by the GPT-6 Astra model, scored well on task automation benchmarks, though no specific score was provided. That compares with Muse, which is free to use for anyone who wants to download the app or visit the website.
Dots is built on the GPT-6 Astra model and targets users looking for AI assistance with daily tasks like email management, travel planning, and report refinement. Availability begins with a limited release, initially for users on OpenAI’s Pro plan, which starts at $100 per month.
"We're starting out as a premium product. It uses a lot of compute," said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. Altman added that while Dots are currently gated for paying users, the company may eventually make them available to a broader audience.
The announcement follows OpenAI’s DevDay, where the company highlighted its focus on AI agents as the next frontier in software development. OpenAI framed the release as a step toward simplifying users' lives by automating mundane tasks.
OpenAI did not say whether Dots are a precursor to future hardware, and the company raised questions about user trust and the balance between helpfulness and intrusiveness. The source notes that users will need to earn more trust before fully automating their lives.
