The Pentagon has launched tailored versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok for use by 3 million civilian and military personnel. These custom AI tools are part of GenAI.mil, a secure portal that allows Department of Defense employees to access commercial AI models without exposing sensitive data. The portal, launched last year, initially offered Google Gemini but now includes the new military versions of ChatGPT and Grok. The tools are designed to meet specific warfighter needs, with features such as document-heavy administrative tasks, logistics, and planning supported, according to the Defense Department. The Pentagon emphasized that these tools will be expanded over time to include additional capabilities.
ChatGPT Mil, developed through OpenAI’s Government program, will offer users a familiar experience similar to the consumer version, with a focus on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs. The tool is intended for routine unclassified work, including administrative and planning tasks. Grok for Government, on the other hand, is positioned for broader military applications, with the Defense Department claiming it will improve productivity, knowledge continuity, and secure collaboration. The Pentagon highlighted that Grok will enable faster and more precise mission execution across various operational contexts, such as market research and supply-chain management.
The Pentagon’s move to deploy these AI tools reflects its broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency while maintaining security. It also underscores the absence of Anthropic’s Claude model, which was previously excluded due to supply-chain risk concerns. The department has engaged with other tech companies, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI, to bolster its AI capabilities.
