Snapchat has updated its policies to stop rewarding fully AI-generated videos in its Spotlight feature. The social media platform announced the change on Friday, stating that its recommendation systems will be adjusted to ensure only videos created by real people are eligible for Spotlight recommendations. The move is part of Snapchat’s broader effort to shift focus back to original posts that highlight human creativity. 'We believe there’s enduring value in rewarding original perspectives, personal storytelling, and the moments that people choose to create and share themselves,' the company stated in its blog post. Snapchat emphasized that creators can still use its AI creative tools to enhance or edit their content. This update aligns with the company’s ongoing efforts to improve Spotlight and reduce the visibility of AI-generated content.
The decision comes as companies across the tech industry face increasing pressure to address concerns about low-quality AI-generated content, referred to as 'AI slop.' Snapchat is not alone in this effort; LinkedIn recently introduced a feature allowing users to report posts that seem AI-generated, while Substack added a tool to help users identify AI-written newsletters. Meta also faced backlash over an Instagram feature that let users modify photos from public accounts using AI, which the company later removed. Meanwhile, YouTube has tightened its policies to prevent monetization of inauthentic content, including generic or repetitive AI-generated material.
Snapchat’s move also includes new content control measures to protect underage users. Those aged 13 to 15 will only be able to share Spotlight posts with people they follow back, aiming to prevent doxxing. This update reflects the company’s commitment to balancing innovation with user safety and content integrity.
