Elon Musk announced that SpaceX is building a foundry in Bastrop, Texas, to cast turbine blades and vanes, a process critical to gas turbine production. The move aims to overcome a manufacturing bottleneck that has limited the availability of gas turbines needed to power data centers. Musk stated that by doing in-house casting, SpaceX can bring gas turbines online up to 18 months faster than current methods, which he called a 'profound game-changer.' This development comes as demand for gas turbines has surged due to the growing electricity needs of AI infrastructure, which has outpaced the capacity of renewable energy sources like solar and wind.

The challenge lies in the extreme conditions under which turbine blades operate. Blades in the hottest section of a gas turbine run at temperatures between 3,000 and 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit, far exceeding the melting point of the metal alloys used. This requires advanced cooling systems and specialized casting techniques to ensure the blades can withstand the heat without cracking. Only four companies globally have mastered this process at an industrial scale, and they are currently operating at full capacity, leaving no room for new entrants. SpaceX's ability to replicate this process could give it a significant advantage in the AI infrastructure race.

The push for gas turbines has also sparked environmental concerns. In Memphis, where SpaceX has operated gas turbines to power its Colossus data centers since 2024, the NAACP has accused the company of violating federal pollution regulations. Research suggests that gas turbines emit smog-forming compounds and hazardous chemicals, which can exacerbate respiratory issues and increase cancer risk. These concerns are not isolated; similar issues are being raised in other regions where gas turbines are used to address data center power shortages.
