Spotify has expanded its use of artificial intelligence by introducing a new feature that lets Premium users engage in interactive conversations with the app to select music and other audio content. The feature, available in the U.S., Ireland, and Sweden for users aged 18 and above, is in a beta release, meaning it may not function perfectly at first, but user feedback will help improve it. According to Spotify, the AI technology used is a mix of its own models and those from multiple providers, based on what is best suited for the task. This new addition continues Spotify’s trend of integrating AI to enhance user interaction with its vast music, podcast, and audiobook catalog. The company already offers an AI DJ, which speaks in an AI voice, and tools for building playlists with prompts and connecting to third-party AI chatbots like ChatGPT. The new feature extends the ability to chat with Spotify beyond the AI DJ experience, allowing users to engage in back-and-forth conversations in the app’s Home and Now Playing views on mobile devices. Users can type or speak to the app to help choose what to play next. Spotify also said the app will be able to chat with users about their listening history, helping them learn more about their favorite music or explore deeper into podcasts or audiobooks. That means users could ask questions like what inspired a certain song, the dates of album releases, or get suggestions for other artists they might like based on their current playlist. Users can also ask about their own listening history, such as when they first played a track or what genres they’ve been streaming lately. In the announcement, Spotify provided examples of how to use the interactive technology, such as asking the app to 'play some artists I haven’t heard before' and then refining the selection with follow-up questions. Users can also ask Spotify to save songs, add them to their queue, or follow an artist through the new feature. The feature is rolling out now to the markets on mobile devices.
