Ukraine's Ministry of Defense announced in January that it would share millions of data points from drone flights with military contractors and commercial companies. Since then, more than 100 companies and the UK government have gained access to this data.

The data collected by drones includes images, video, and controller inputs, offering insights into how machines and humans respond to dynamic situations. This information is being used to train AI models, which are increasingly shaping civilian life.

The data generated by drones in conflict zones provides valuable machine experience under conditions that no laboratory can replicate. These data points, especially those from exceptional circumstances like signal jams or human improvisation, are critical for developing robust AI models.

"The data that's most valuable for training AI models comes from exceptions: the moment visibility disappears, a signal jams, or a human operator improvises," said a representative from Enabled Intelligence, an American company processing drone footage for AI training.

The use of battlefield data is expanding beyond military applications, with drones trained in Ukraine's signal-jammed airspace now being used in agriculture for field mapping. This trend is likely to spread to other countries, creating a new marketplace for data.

Ukraine has begun to address the ethical concerns surrounding the use of battlefield data, but broader regulatory frameworks remain unclear. Governments should treat this data as a controlled weapons transfer, recording its origin and licensing its users.
