Wiley released ResponsibleAI on June 1, 2024, saying it enhances ethical AI use in higher education. It is the company's first major update in the safety category since its 2022 launch of the ResponsibleAI framework.
Wiley reported a 30% improvement in ethical AI compliance metrics, measured on a standardized benchmark for academic AI tools. That compares with a 15% improvement from the earlier framework.
ResponsibleAI is built on Wiley's existing AI platform and targets use cases like plagiarism detection and bias mitigation in educational content. Availability begins in July 2024, initially for faculty and academic institutions.
"ResponsibleAI is a critical step in ensuring AI tools support academic integrity and ethical research," said Dr. Emily Carter, Chief Technology Officer at Wiley. The tool helps educators identify and address potential biases in AI-generated content.
The announcement follows a June 2024 webinar on ResponsibleAI hosted by IEEE. Wiley framed the significance as part of its broader commitment to ethical AI in education.
Wiley did not say how the tool will be integrated into existing learning management systems, and it raised the open question of how institutions will adopt the new tool. The company plans to release additional updates in the next quarter.
