DeepMind released AlphaGenome Atlas on September 4, 2024, saying it provides a predictive map of every possible DNA letter change in the human genome. It is the company's first major update in the genomics field since its 2021 AlphaFold protein structure prediction breakthrough.

DeepMind reported the tool achieves a 98.6% accuracy rate in predicting DNA mutations, measured on a benchmark of 10,000 human genetic variants. That compares with an 89.2% accuracy rate from its earlier genomic models.

AlphaGenome Atlas is built on DeepMind's AlphaFold architecture and targets genetic research, drug development, and personalized medicine. Availability begins in early 2025, initially for academic researchers and pharmaceutical companies.

"AlphaGenome Atlas is a significant step forward in understanding the genetic basis of human disease," said Dr. Demis Hassabis, CEO of DeepMind. The tool enables researchers to explore how individual genetic changes might influence health outcomes.

The announcement follows DeepMind's 2024 collaboration with the European Bioinformatics Institute to advance human genome research. DeepMind itself frames the significance as a tool to accelerate genetic discovery and improve medical treatments.

DeepMind did not say how the tool will be used in clinical settings, and it raised the open question of how to interpret the vast amount of genetic data it generates. The company said it will continue refining the model with ongoing research and feedback from the scientific community.
