Google released its AI & Economy ATLAS report on September 15, 2026, showing how AI is reshaping global work. The report highlights how different professions and regions are adopting AI, with India’s creative industry using AI at 1.6 times the global average.
The report includes new data visualizations, making ATLAS data more accessible. It shows that the U.S. leads in technical AI adoption, with 30% of AI usage in computer and mathematical occupations, double the global average.
Google also launched an interactive, open-access experience to explore AI usage across occupations and countries. Users can examine AI adoption rates, from electricians to purchasing managers, and compare usage patterns globally.
"Scientists are using AI at a higher rate than many other occupations; nearly half of surveyed scientists use some form of AI every day," said Zanna Iscenko, AI & Economy Lead. This research, from Google, Google DeepMind, and MIT FutureTech, highlights how AI is changing scientific workflows.
The report finds that scientists save about 7 hours weekly with AI, but there are bottlenecks in hypothesis validation and physical experimentation. These challenges suggest the need for redesigned scientific processes to fully leverage AI’s potential.
Google did not specify how AI will impact large-scale scientific output, and it raises questions about the future of AI in research. The company plans to continue its long-term ATLAS research with academic partners to explore new insights.
