Hugging Face released its Agentenbibliothek smolagents in 2026, saying it enables developers to create KI agents capable of performing multi-step tasks. It is the company's first major update to its AI tools since its initial release in 2023.
Hugging Face reported its agents can handle complex workflows, measured by their ability to execute tasks like finding Open-Source-Modelle for a German support chatbot. That compares with earlier tools that could only provide basic information or perform single-step actions.
smolagents is built on Hugging Face's existing platform and targets developers looking to build systems that can autonomously plan, execute, and evaluate tasks. Availability begins in Q4 2026, initially for developers and researchers.
"KI-Agenten sind Multi-Step-Systeme, bei denen auf eine Entscheidung jeweils ein Tool-Aufruf und dessen Ausführung folgen kann", said Kai Schiller, Community Article Author. The system allows agents to make decisions based on available tools and contextual information.
The announcement follows Hugging Face's growing focus on AI systems that can interact with external tools and data sources. Hugging Face itself frames the significance of agents as a step toward more complex and autonomous AI applications.
Hugging Face did not say how the agents will handle real-time data or complex decision-making scenarios, and raised the open question of whether agents can truly operate without human intervention. The company said it will continue to refine the technology in future updates.
