Hugging Face released the Open Superconductor Challenge (OSC) on September 29, 2026, allowing anyone to screen thousands of 2D materials for unconventional (d-wave) superconductivity using a laptop CPU. It is the company's first open-science initiative in condensed-matter physics since its initial research projects.

The challenge reported a verified leaderboard with 63 materials already processed from a 4,832-material database, with the top material, CuS₂, scoring 23.31 on the OSC Pairing Index. That compares with the baseline score of 15.86 for Br₂Cu, the fifth-ranked material.

OSC is built on a doped Hubbard model and targets the discovery of new superconducting materials by leveraging community participation. Availability begins immediately, initially for researchers, ML practitioners, and students.

"The idea is to crowd-screen first, verify precisely," said the Hugging Face team. "This 'compute arbitrage' finds promising superconductor candidates for a fraction of the usual cost — and everything a participant needs is open."

The announcement follows the release of the Computational 2D Materials Database (C2DB) under CC-BY 4.0. Hugging Face framed the significance as an opportunity to map the landscape of 2D superconductivity through open science.

Hugging Face did not say which material will be confirmed as a superconductor, and raised the open question of whether the #1 material is a confirmed superconductor. The challenge will close on December 31, 2026.
