Meta released Muse, an AI agent with a childlike mascot, in 2024, saying it helps users complete digital tasks. It is the company's first major AI update since its launch of the Meta AI assistant in 2023.

Meta reported Muse reached the top of the app charts, measured by downloads and user engagement, with no prior benchmark comparison provided. That compares with no earlier figure, as the source does not mention one.

Muse is built on Meta’s AI infrastructure and targets users looking for assistance with digital tasks. Availability begins later this year, initially for adults 18 and over.

"This is a story in search of a story," said Daniel Roberts, a Meta spokesperson. People want to be able to create their own avatar with personality and unique style, because it's fun and brings them joy.

The announcement follows Meta’s recent Meta Connect event, where CEO Mark Zuckerberg showcased the Muse mascot in a toga and laurel wreath. The source frames the significance as a cultural moment, with the mascot becoming a symbol of the product.

Meta did not say the design was explicitly aimed at children, and the open question remains about whether the mascot appeals to younger audiences. The source says youth advocates are pushing back against the design.
