OpenAI and Anthropic experienced service outages on Thursday morning, impacting their AI chatbots. OpenAI reported ChatGPT and Codex were unavailable for some users starting at 7:43 am PT.
SpaceX, xAI’s parent company, stated that Grok’s issues stemmed from an outage at its Memphis compute center. The company apologized to impacted compute partners and marked the issue as resolved by 10:05 am PT.
Anthropic alerted users about a partial outage at 6:23 am PT, affecting Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5. The company identified the cause and deployed a fix, marking the issue as resolved by 9:16 am PT.
"A routing error starting around 7:43 am PT on Thursday, September 3, made ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users across platforms," said Kathleen Chaykowski, OpenAI spokesperson. The error was resolved by 8:17 am PT, with ongoing monitoring.
The outages occurred without a shared cause, as neither OpenAI nor Anthropic cited an external source. Major cloud providers like AWS and Azure did not report similar issues.
OpenAI did not specify the cause of the routing error, and the incident highlights the challenges of maintaining large-scale AI services. The companies continue to monitor the situation and ensure service stability.
