OpenAI released an automated AI research intern on September 6, 2026, saying it can carry out well-defined research tasks under human direction. It is the company's first major update in research automation since its initial announcement last fall.
OpenAI reported that researchers are using coding agents throughout the day, with total usage rapidly increasing, outpacing growth among other OpenAI teams. That compares with earlier usage levels where agent runtime across the research organization was still below that of total human labor.
The automated research intern is built on agentic coding systems and targets advancing deep learning and alignment. Availability begins with internal use, initially for OpenAI researchers.
"Researchers are using coding agents throughout the day (often in concurrent sessions) and total usage is rapidly increasing, outpacing growth among other OpenAI teams," said OpenAI researchers. The system is helping researchers contribute code faster and run more experiments.
The announcement follows the recent Hugging Face incident. OpenAI said it is taking steps to ensure safety and alignment as it continues its research automation efforts.
OpenAI did not say how to safely get all the way to aligned, full RSI, and noted that more capable systems can become harder to monitor. The company said it will continue to evolve its transparency approach as its measurement techniques and understanding improve.
