OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on September 12, 2026, saying it demonstrates a significant advancement in spatial reasoning. It is the company's first major update to its GPT series since the launch of GPT-5 in 2025.

OpenAI reported a median progress score of 46 out of 100 on the StationeryBench, measured on a new robotics benchmark. That compares with MolmoAct2's score of 12, which completed zero tasks out of 100.

GPT-6 Astra is built on OpenAI's latest architecture and targets complex robotic tasks requiring precise spatial reasoning. Availability begins with a public GitHub repository, initially for researchers and developers.

"Astra appears to be a big leap forward for spatial reasoning," said Yoav Artzi, an AI researcher at Cornell and Google DeepMind. He suspects OpenAI trained the model on large amounts of 3D data such as Blender scenes.

The announcement follows OpenAI's long-term plans to build its own consumer robots. The source itself frames the significance as a potential step toward more capable robotic systems.

OpenAI did not say how the model performs in other scenarios, and Artzi notes that "even Astra doesn't get to what humans do in other scenarios." The source says further testing and benchmarking will follow.
