The US government has eased restrictions on Anthropic’s most advanced AI model, Claude Mythos 5, allowing the company to grant access to more than 100 US organizations, including large corporations and government agencies. In a letter obtained by WIRED, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that appropriate safeguards are in place, permitting certain trusted partners to access the model. The partial reinstatement of access to Mythos 5 follows a directive from the White House that required Anthropic to limit foreign nationals’ access to its models. Lutnick’s letter now allows approved organizations to permit their foreign national employees to access the model, and Anthropic may do the same for its own foreign employees. Anthropic’s spokesperson, Eduardo Maia Silva, noted that the company is pleased with the progress and continues to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again. The Trump administration had previously expressed concerns about Anthropic’s rollout of Mythos after it granted access to a South Korean telecom firm believed to have ties to China. The administration also raised concerns that Fable 5 could be jailbroken, prompting the export control directive.
